Joseph returns

The Raiders added a second player who wasn’t good enough to make the 53-man roster out of training camp, with defensive tackle William Joseph returning after being cut on Aug. 30.

Joseph adds some bulk to a Raiders defensive front which was shredded for 252 yards on 57 carries against Atlanta and has surrendered 177 yards per game over the last four games.

The former first-round pick of the New York Giants was with the team as they began practice, wearing No. 96, as were cornerback Michael Waddell (No. 32) and linebacker Marquice Cooper (No. 95).

Raiders release Joseph to make way for Lelie

WilliamJoseph
ALAMEDA, Calif.: The Oakland Raiders released defensive tackle William Joseph on Tuesday to create room on the roster for receiver Ashley Lelie.

Lelie officially signed his one-year contract Tuesday, forcing the Raiders to create a roster spot for him. They did it by cutting ties with Joseph, who made little impact after signing as a free agent in the offseason.

Lelie joined the Raiders just days after being cut by the 49ers. He had 10 catches for 115 yards last season for San Francisco while struggling with injuries, including a strained quadriceps.

William Joseph Camp Update

The offensive linemen got a boost in a drill pitting them against their defensive line counterparts. Left tackle Kwame Harris buried defensive end Kalimba Edwards and knocked him to the turf. Before that Aaron Boone completely dominated William Joseph in back-to-back tries.

Speaking of Joseph, the former first-round draft pick of the Giants hasn’t done much this camp and has been more noticeable for what he hasn’t done than anything else.

William Joseph primer: 10 things you need to know

Without further ado, then, to welcome Mr. Joseph aboard, here are 10 things you need to know about the big guy.

• A former Miami Hurricane, Joseph was a No. 25 pick in the 2003 draft, taken by the New York Giants in the opening round. Drafted just after Dallas Clark, Joseph got the first-round call before current Raider Kwame Harris, Nick Barnett and Nnamdi Asomuga.

• His very first game in that 2003 season may have been Joseph's greatest in his entire career with one sack and one forced fumble recovered by his team for a TD.

• Though Joseph remained a member of the Giants through Super Bowl XLII, he was actually only active for one game last season - opening day - and didn't see action. Shortly after Week 1, Joseph was placed on injured reserve. Injuries have been the bane of Joseph's NFL existence these past few seasons, with 25 of 51 possible games missed.

• Thanks to the injuries, Joseph is habitually called a "disappointment" by the media (while playing in New York; imagine that). And check out this writer, who labels Joseph "one of the least popular players in Giants history," before incidentally going on to take a random swipe: "For some strange reason, the Raiders decided Joseph would be an asset to their defense. Oh, well (sic)...guess that's why they're the Raiders." (Now, Raider Nation, don't get too upset: As a Bills fan, this guy clearly has a lot of repressed hostility and frustration.)

• Ironically, the man taking Joseph's starting spot and earning his Super Bowl ring when he went down was ... Raider castoff Dave Tollefson. Click here to continue reading...

William Joseph tackles fresh start in Oakland

He’ll need all the help he can get out in Oakland, where the Giants’ former first-round pick signed yesterday . I haven’t seen the terms of the deal, but I find it hard to believe it’s more than one or two years or much more than the NFL minimum.

Actually, I really do believe this: If there are absolutely no expectations for Willie – and really, why would there be? – he’ll be fine. If he stays healthy, he’ll be a solid depth player who will even make a play every six weeks or so. But if they need him to start or be an important player … well, let’s just say he won’t be the Raiders’ ticket out of the bowels of the NFL.

In the meantime, I’d like to wish my Bay Area colleagues well trying to coax a quote out of Willie Jo. May you have better luck than we did in New York, and may you learn something else about Mr. Mystery than the fact that he’s “good.” (Memo to Bay Area repoters: Try not to snicker when he says that).

There is some poetic symmetry, by the way, with Willie Jo landing with the Raiders, one of the least media-friendly organizations in the league. He should be right at home.

Dolphins talk to Joseph, former UM star

Although the Dolphins have already added two defensive tackles since the start of free agency last week, they met with former Giants defensive tackle William Joseph Friday.

Joseph, a 6-foot-5, 308 pounder, was the 25th draft pick in 2003 after a solid career with the University of Miami. Joseph, 28, missed the Giants' entire Super Bowl championship run last season with a back injury, and was released on Feb. 29.

Joseph has played in 55 games with 17 starts. He has 72 tackles and seven sacks.

The Dolphins acquired veteran defensive tackle Jason Ferguson in a trade with Dallas last week, and on the same day signed free-agent defensive tackle Randy Starks, who at 24 is nine years younger than Ferguson.

No offer was extended to Joseph, who is also talking to the Browns, another team that uses the 3-4 scheme. Joseph began his career at UM as a rush end before moving inside.
