Reaching new Hites

Attentive basketball fans might have noticed an unusual name gracing a roster in the Orlando NBA summer league this past week. No, it wasn’t the return of Celtics’ draft bust Kedrick Brown (may Allah curse his name). The name in question was Robert Hite, formerly of the Miami Heat and patron saint of Faulty Sports Arrests.

Hite, who was then on the Nets’ summer roster and might yet make someone’s team, was arrested earlier this year for a DUI while a member of the Miami squad, and was promptly kicked off the team by Pat Riley, despite playing well in a few regular-season games. But tests later showed that Hite was not in fact intoxicated, that his blood alcohol was well within the legal limit, and that he was unfairly held by police. Unfortunately, this little-known player missed a Heat game against the Mavericks because of the arrest, and his subsequent dismissal forced him to spend the rest of the year with Sioux City, of the NBDL.

Hite had an interesting quote about his fate when he resurfaced as a Net in Orlando. “No hard feelings at all,” he said. “It’s the business of the NBA.”
Getting kicked off the team for a DUI is the business of the NBA? Maybe that is true, if you only averaged 4.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.

Hite getting second chance at NBA after mistaken arrest

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Robert Hite is wearing a New Jersey Nets jersey this week for summer league play, with hopes that some NBA club will offer a second chance he insists is deserved.

And if that team is the Miami Heat, well, the second-year guard will be absolutely thrilled.

"If they want me back," Hite said, "I'll definitely come back."

The way Hite sees it, he should have never left South Florida in the first place.

The former University of Miami standout seemed a longshot to make the Heat's regular-season roster when the then-reigning NBA champions invited him to training camp a year ago. But Hite earned a spot, played in 12 games over the season's first 2?months and rewarded the Heat when given significant playing time, averaging 11.7 points in the three games in which he played at least 20 minutes.

The Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development League has acquired guard Robert Hite and center Nigel Dixon. To make roster room, Sioux Falls waived guard DeSean Hadley and center Chad Bell.

An undrafted rookie from the University of Miami, Hite (6-2, 187) played 12 games with the Miami HEAT this season before being waived on Feb. 1. He averaged 4.3 points and 1.2 rebounds in 11.3 minutes. In 121 games at the University of Miami he averaged 14.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.5 assists and 29.5 minutes. Hite finished his collegiate career fifth on Miami's all-time scoring list with 1,717 points.

Hite's focus clear after charges dropped

MIAMI ?Robert Hite said he is moving forward. The former University of Miami standout just wants to make it clear he is doing so without any baggage.

While much was made about the Heat rookie guard being charged with driving under the influence before the Jan. 21 home game against Dallas, including a special report on a South Florida television station, less heralded was last week's dropping of the charges by Miami-Dade prosecutors.

"It's a matter of me getting the story out there and making sure people realize it wasn't what it was and clear that," Hite said Monday by phone, four days after he was cut by the Heat to clear a roster space for the return of guard Eddie Jones. "Right now, I've just got to focus on getting back to basketball and staying in shape."

Hite's development has come at the team's confidence in him combined with his natural talent. Being given a chance, if you will. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

But, this young kid from Cincinnati, Ohio has never been afraid of hard work to achieve any task or obstacle thrown at him. People said he was too small, not strong enough, that he couldn't handle the rock. That same detracting mentality is why Gilbert Arenas wears the number '0' ... and pops 60-point games on bona fide superstars.

Hite will get there someday. he's certainly in the right support network. "I've just been trying to prove people wrong my whole life," he said. "All I can do is just play hard and keep working and hopefully everything works out for me."

It will for Hite and it will for the Heat, because of the way this team embraces one another and moves forward. It's respectable, to say the least. And thought it's not measurable on paper, in the end, they'll win more games because of it.

As for rookie guard Robert Hite, the former University of Miami standout who was arrested on a DUI charge over the weekend, he’ll be away from the team foran undetermined amount of time. The team released a statement from president/coach Pat Riley saying:

“Because this is a pending legal matter, we are limited by what we can comment on. That said, Robert has personally apologized to me, to the team, ownership and his family to the extent that his arrest has caused any embarrassment. We feel confident that Robert is acutely aware of the seriousness of the incident and understands that his actions in his personal life have an impact, not only on himself and his family, but on our entire organization and set an example for the youth in our community.

While we stand behind our players, we want to make it clear in a public forum that the Miami HEAT takes great pride in being an outstanding community leader and expects the same of its players. Robert and I have mutually agreed that he take some time away from the team to try and get his personal issues in order.

The team will have no further comment on this issue.”

Heat rookie guard Hite charged with DUI, misses game

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Heat rookie Robert Hite was charged with driving under the influence early Sunday, and missed Miami's game against Dallas.

According to the Miami Beach Police report, which was first obtained by Miami television station WSVN, an officer detected a "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath" after the player was stopped for speeding. The report also said Hite's eyes were bloodshot and his speech slurred.

Hite was processed and released on $1,000 bond at about 2 p.m., Miami-Dade Corrections spokeswoman Janelle Hall said. Hite was not at the arena for the Heat's game, which began at 1 p.m.

PHOENIX -- Two All-Stars are hurt, the Hall of Fame coach has taken leave, one player has dealt with a Salmonella infection and two veterans are back in South Florida trying to make weight.

All this while the Heat's defense of its championship grows more difficult by the day.So this is what the NBA is like?

"It's been crazy," Heat rookie guard Robert Hite said before the Heat played at the Suns. "Up-and-down, people getting hurt, sick. The [Riley] situation that just happened.

"It's been wild. I've never been through anything like this. But we have just got to stay together as a team, maintain until everybody gets back and make a run."

Rookie guard Robert Hite and forward Earl Barron apparently have earned Riley's trust -- and a prominent role in the rotation.

Both saw playing time in the first half Friday after they combined for 24 points and made 10 of 15 shots Wednesday at San Antonio.

''I'm just trying to come in and be aggressive,'' said Hite, a former University of Miami star. ``[Riley] is just looking for guys to go out and give their all.''

Neither of the veteran guards are on the Miami Heat roster as they return to defend their 2005-06 NBA Championship.

Instead, the Heat have opted for a couple of green, young men in Notre Dame's Chris Quinn and the University of Miami's Robert Hite.

Just who are these guys and what makes them so talented that they are on Miami's roster instead of a veteran or two who cold push the Heat's mercury back to blistering championship level?

MIAMI -- Robert Hite moved here four years ago, leaving his family's Cincinnati home after accepting a scholarship to play college basketball at Miami.

When his days with the Hurricanes were done, the 6-foot-2 guard figured he'd move again to begin his professional career, either to some NBA city or Europe.

Those plans are on hold -- and for a very good reason.

When the Miami Heat waived Vincent Grier on Sunday night, that left them with 15 players -- and Hite is one of them. Barring another roster move such as a trade, he'll be getting a locker when the regular season opens Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls.

Don't tell Robert Hite he can't play shooting guard in the NBA.

After life as a 6-foot-2 small forward at the University of Miami, Hite figures he's up to any challenge.

Considered among the longest of long shots at the start of training camp, Hite not only seemingly has played his way onto the Heat's roster, but could wind up with spot action because of his sizzling shooting. He is 15 of 23 from the field and 7 of 11 on 3-pointers over the past three games, highlighted by Friday's 25-point performance in Memphis.

"As a small two, he's quick as hell," coach Pat Riley said, "and the fact that he can really stretch the court, he's like Eddie House."
