Derrick Morse – Note to Mr. Morse: When asked to make a block in space and as such choose to use a cut block, it is much more effective if the defender is actually knocked off his feet and not able to make the tackle. The guard failed to employ this technique twice in the limited time during his play.

Derrick Morse made his NFL preseason debuts on Thursday night.

Morse, an offensive lineman who played for the University of Miami, saw time at left guard in the Browns' 24-20 loss to the Jets. Morse was playing when backup quarterback Brady Quinn was running the team. Morse was not signed by the Browns until June.

Day 4: Improving each and every day what the interior offensive lineman lacks in physical ability, Morse has shown a solid work ethic and decent tools. Today for example the guard displayed his strong hands and the ability to really entangle a defender at the point of attack, plus enough athletic ability to get his head across and cut off his assignment backside. What he lacked during the day was patience. Morse was simply unable to sit back and wait to land his punch but would rather attack a defender and maul. As a late addition to the roster, the Hurricane product has an uphill battle but he continues to work hard show some promise.

Day 3: Strong when delivering his initial blow, the Hurricane product displayed dead feet during the day.   Early indications as an in-the-box blocker, Morse needs to pump the feet to drive opponents off the ball.

Day 2: Looked solid in the box, but struggled when asked to move in space and handling more talented defensive linemen.

The releases make room for rookie contract signings, and also allowed the team to pick up Miami Hurricane OG Derrick Morse, who attended the team's rookie tryouts in April. Morse is 6'4", 325 and recorded middling numbers during workouts. While his numbers aren't impressive, Morse is a plugger who was solid for Miami throughout his career.

Adding Morse presumably gives the Browns more training camp bodies at offensive guard, where the team has had to deal with the injury to RG Ryan Tucker and the release of LeCharles Bentley. Last year's starting RG, Seth McKinney, has been working largely as a backup center, which made the Browns thin at the position during mini-camp.

After going undrafted in the NFL Draft, the former Miami Hurricane has signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns.

NBC2 Sports Director Chris Long confirmed through emails with Morse’s sister that he received an offer Friday which he accepted.

He will leave for Cleveland on Sunday to go through two weeks of offseason workouts. He also expects to be with the Browns for training camp in August.

Morse worked out for the Browns and Giants in the weeks following the draft.

As an offensive lineman at the University of Miami, Estero High product Derrick Morse spent the past four years opening holes for teammates.

Now, he's looking for one.

Despite making 29 starts for the Hurricanes in his college career, Morse wasn't taken in the NFL Draft, and now he's hitting the road to sell his game.

"As long as I have the opportunity," the 6-foot-4, 320-pound guard from Bonita Springs said, "that's all that matters. It's about going to minicamps and being seen. I'm a little behind the eight ball, sure, but I wouldn't say I'm disappointed. You've just got to take care of your opportunities."

He is working on his second.

After spending last weekend in Cleveland trying out for the Browns, Morse, an undrafted free agent, leaves today for New York, where he'll be in camp with the Giants the next few days.

Morse had hoped he wouldn't need the trip to New York. He'd hoped the Browns would sign him to his first contract following the tryout during their minicamp.

It didn't happen. Not right away, at least.

Morse said he had a meeting with Browns coaches on Sunday, and though they weren't ready to sign him, they told him they would be in touch.

"They said they might have a spot for me," Morse said, "but nothing's for sure. That's why I'm going to New York."

It's his latest opportunity.

Morse hopes the Giants will see why he was so productive at Miami. He hopes they will offer him a contract, and the chance to make their team.

If it doesn't work out? Well, he'll just keep trying.

"I just want to play football," Morse said. "I don't care what team I play for."

After a stressful time of deciding which team to go with, the former University of Miami guard accepted an invitation from the Browns. He'll report to the NFL team's rookie minicamp Thursday and will take part in practice Friday through Sunday.

"It is (stressful)," the Estero High graduate said. "You gotta make a lot of important decisions once free agency comes. You have to do what's best for you, find the best opportunity. If it's not a great opportunity, you may not make it.

"I went to bed Sunday with a headache but I woke up (Tuesday) feeling great."

Morse said he chose Cleveland because the team was building its practice squad and needing back-up players. He also likes that he'll be rejoining Cleveland offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, a former Hurricanes assistant, and former Miami tight end Kellen Winslow.

Morse said that if the tryout doesn't work out with Cleveland, he'll have another the following weekend with the New York Giants. "And if they want me to sign, I'm signing," Morse said.
