DeMarcus Van Dyke Impressive So Far

DeMarcusVanDykeRaiders
DeMarcus Van Dyke – Oakland

Van Dyke starts at right corner for the Raiders. From a speed and athletic point of view he has everything a scout looks for in a corner. He is extremely fast with loose hips, a quick pedal and fluid movement in transition. He can line up and play press or play off and show good mirror ability. He flashes good hitting ability on receivers and wraps when he tackles. What I didn’t like is he is very average in run support. In Sunday’s game versus Kansas City there were more than just a few times when he was more passive than aggressive against the run. He had opportunities to come up quickly and lay a hit on the runner and didn’t do it. Still, he had 4 tackles in the game but could have had more. I like his mirror skills in coverage, but I question his ball skills. He had an interception on an overthrown ball, but there were a couple of plays where he was late to react to the ball in the air and gave up completions on passes he could have broken up. I know I am being hard on him but this is a talented player who has the tools to be a top corner in the league. To be a top player at that position, you have to have strong mental discipline. I question if Van Dyke has that yet.

Based on what I have seen so far, Van Dyke is having a good rookie season and his overall play Sunday was fairly good, he just has to develop down after down consistency and make the plays he is capable of making. He gets a B but was capable of getting an A in this game.

Leonard Hankerson embracing opportunity

LeonardHankerson
Through the first six games of the season, rookies Leonard Hankerson and Niles Paul found game reps at wide receiver hard to come by.

Hankerson – drafted in the third round out of Miami – spent the first five games on the inactive list, and Paul – a fifth-round pick out of Nebraska – played primarily on special teams.

But with Santana Moss now sidelined for five to seven weeks with a broken left hand, the Redskins will count on both rookies to make contributions in an offense that already struggled in the play-making and scoring departments.

Paul is competing with second-year pro Anthony Armstrong for the starting spot that Moss previously had held, while Hankerson – who got in last week’s game for one play – could see his activity increase as well.

“All I can do is go out there and play the role I’ve been given. If something special happens out of it, that means I’m doing my job, right?” said the 6-foot-1, 224-pound Paul, who last week recorded two catches for 25 yards. “…Just learning from [Moss], I’m ready to be put in this position. Hopefully I can come through during the game.”

Hankerson spent the first six weeks of the season working to pick up the offense and make up for lost time since the lockout prevented the team from holding OTAs.

“It was tough coming in, being on top in college and then coming in here, being all the way down to the bottom,” Hankerson said. “Not getting the same amount routes every day and stuff like that, not playing the game. It was tough. … I’ve learned a whole lot.”

Coach Mike Shanahan said in the last couple of weeks of practice, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Hankerson has “made some unbelievable plays,” and so he received his first opportunity on Sunday.

That debut was less than memorable as Hankerson and quarterback John Beck had a miscommunication on the one pass that came his way, and Carolina’s Chris Gamble picked it off.

But Hankerson is eager to redeem himself.

“I look forward to it a whole lot,” he said. “Just keep doing what I’ve been doing the last couple of weeks, working out, getting better, meeting with the coaches, doing what I’ve got to do and just keep putting in work.”

SaberCats Welcome Back WR/DB Jason Geathers

JasonGeathersRattlers
The SaberCats today announced two-time All-Ironman selection WR/DB Jason Geathers has returned to the SaberCats for the 2012 season. He last played for San Jose from 2006-08.

"Jason Geathers is a big, physical receiver who was with us during our last championship run in 2007." said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He gives us another dimension on offense and has the skill and ability to play on the defensive side of the ball as well. We couldn't be more excited that he is returning to play for the SaberCats."

Geathers (6-3, 215, Miami (FL)) played his first three seasons in the AFL with the SaberCats. During his time with the team, he posted receiving totals of 98 receptions for 874 yards and 16 touchdowns during the regular seasonmag-glass_10x10. His best season with San Jose came in 2007 where he caught 54 passes for 509 yards and 11 touchdowns to as well as 24.5 tackles with 3.5 for loss, one pass defensed and one fumble recovery, earning his first All-Ironman honor in the process.

"I'm excited to be back with the SaberCats," said Geathers. "We had a great run during my first three years with the team and I'm looking forward to getting this franchise back to its winning ways with another ArenaBowl title this coming season."

Geathers spent the 2011 season with the Arizona Rattlers where he had a career year with 93 receptions for 1,065 yards and 28 touchdowns, finishing third on the team in receiving. He also saw time on defense with 15.0 tackles and one interception in limited action at defensive back. Prior to the Rattlers, he spent time with the Tampa Bay Storm and Alabama Vipers in 2010.

Geathers also served stints with the Cleveland Browns (2003) and the New York Giants (2004) before starting his career in the AFL.

Playing four years at Miami (FL) he saw action at both receiver and tailback playing in 42 games for the Hurricanes. For his career, he totaled 121 rushes for 671 yards and five touchdowns while catching 23 passes for 277 yards.

A native of Delray Beach, FL he attended Spanish River (FL) High School where he earned All-America honors as Florida's No. 1 tailback seeing action at tailback, quarterback, receiver, linebacker and returner.

McGahee misses another Broncos practice, likely out vs. Lions

WillisMcGaheeBroncos
The Broncos are back outdoors, and back in pads, for practice today.

With the two main practice fields at Dove Valley cleared of snow, starting quarterback

Tim Tebow went to work with a full complement of wide receivers. The only offensive player who remains out of practice is starting running back Willis McGahee, who had surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his right hand.

Head coach John Fox said yesterday that he wanted to see how McGahee did later in the week before ruling him out of Sunday's game against Detroit. That McGahee was not with his teammates today is yet another sign that he won't play against the Lions.

Ed Reed 'wouldn't change' approach to returning punts

EdReed3
Ed Reed is one of the most electric defensive players in NFL history – especially when he has the ball in his hands.

In 10 seasons, the seven-time Pro Bowl free safety has scored 13 touchdowns and is the only player in NFL history to score return touchdowns off an interception, fumble recovery, punt return and blocked punt.

Reed can also make some heart-stopping decisions, as he did during a punt return in the Ravens’ 12-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After Jaguars punter Nick Harris booted a punt from Jacksonville’s 28-yard line, the ball dropped before Reed, who appeared willing to let the Jaguars down the ball.

But at the last moment, Reed tried to corral the bouncing ball, and several Jacksonville players, thinking that Reed had botched the catch, pounced on the ball. Replays, however, showed that the ball barely bounced away from Reed, and the ball was ruled downed at the Ravens’ 32 with possession going to the Ravens.

On Thursday, Reed said he had no qualms about trying to collect a bouncing punt despite a coverage unit bearing down on him.

“I was just telling the guys, just getting them out of the way to make sure the ball doesn’t hit them,” he said. “Once I realized that it kind of bounced away from everybody, if I got a good bounce, I was thinking it was going to bounce to me or away from me the way the ball was bouncing. If I get it, maybe we spark something. And if I don’t get it and I fumble it, we still might spark something because we would understand as a defense and as a team, ‘Ok, now we need to make a play.’ Like I told coach, I wouldn’t change it. Obviously, you have to be smart about the plays that you try to make, but like I said, I think it was just a spark either way it [went]. It’s good that it didn’t hit me, and I knew it didn’t hit me. But, like I said, if it hit me and I would have fumbled it and they would have gotten the ball or we would have gotten it – however it would have played out – I think it would have been a good spark on our side because we needed it.”

Special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg conceded that Reed’s attempt was “too close for comfort.” But Rosburg also said he supports Reed’s decision-making.

“I have a lot of faith in Ed,” Rosburg said. “Ed has demonstrated throughout his history – both on special teams and defense – that he has some amazing ball skills, and he judges and analyzes football probably as good as anybody I’ve ever seen. When Ed thinks he can make a play, we’re all behind him. Obviously, ball security is primary, and he understands that. So with that said, that particular play was too close for comfort, but we have a lot of trust in Ed, and he’s earned that.”

Though cautious, Vilma remains productive

JonVilma
METAIRIE, La. – Linebacker Jonathan Vilma has been a mainstay on the Saints’ injury report since he suffered a knee injury in Week 2, but he only missed one game in Week 3 and has remained productive ever since. The team has been resting Vilma during the week to keep the wear and tear off of the knee.

He came up big last Sunday, pouncing on a fumbled snap early before the Saints routed the Indianapolis Colts 62-7. Teammates joked that Vilma just got lucky, but he insisted that he saw the ball bounce off quarterback Curtis Painter’s chest and went after it.

Just as importantly, Vilma was able to sit out much of Sunday night’s game after it turned into a rout. Vilma has been arguably the Saints’ most instinctive playmakers since he arrived in 2008. So they hope he can gradually get better and get back close to 100 percent by the end of the season. The Week 11 bye should come at a great time.

Ed Reed did not practice Thursday

EdReed
The Ravens distributed their second injury report of the week and confirmed that free safety Ed Reed did not practice Thursday.

The seven-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a stinger in Monday night’s 12-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not appear to show any aftereffects during Wednesday’s practice – in which he fully participated.

The team could just be taking extra precautions to be careful with Reed, who has battled a nerve impingement in his neck over the past two seasons.

Reed joined four other players – wide receiver Lee Evans (left ankle), left guard Ben Grubbs (strained ligaments in right toe), inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (hamstring) and rookie running back Anthony Allen (thigh) – in sitting out Thursday’s session.

Cornerback Chris Carr (left hamstring) was upgraded from limited to full participation. Strong safety Tom Zbikowski (post-concussion symptoms) also fully practiced.

Cornerback Danny Gorrer was limited because of a thigh injury.

Two Arizona Cardinals starters – outside linebacker Joey Porter (knee) and strong safety Adrian Wilson (foot) – missed practice for the second straight day.

But two other starters in running back Beanie Wells (knee) and wide receiver Early Doucet (quad) practiced on a limited basis after sitting out Wednesday’s session.

Starting tight end and former Raven Todd Heap was limited for the second consecutive day with a strained hamstring.

Vince Wilfork, playing more than ever, just wants to be on the field

VinceWilfork
Patriots NT Vince Wilfork [stats] and his line received some reinforcements at practice this week, with DE Brandon Deaderick and DT Ron Brace joining the workouts after being on the PUP list. No one is sure whether they'll be activated, though.

"Whoever Bill (Belichick) puts out there, we have confidence in," Wilfork said. "That's how it's going to be."

But considering Wilfork has played about 80 percent of the snaps this year, more than ever, I wondered if he'd welcome a break. Turns out... not so much.

"I don't know, I always want to be on the field," Wilfork responded. "No matter how you slice it. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't, depending on how many snaps I've been out there or how I'm feeling at the time. That's why I always work hard toward conditioning. Being a big guy, playing a lot of snaps, you really don't see that around the league anymore. Because you have guys that come in and give guys breaks at times. But I'm the type of person, I'm going to do whatever I can to stay on the field, because I want to be on the field. I want to be out there in every situation. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it don't. But I'm prepared for it. I love to play. I love to play because if I'm on the field, I feel like there's a better chance to help my teammates. And when I'm off the field, the guy who's in for me, I'm confident he can do his job. But I always want to be on the field. I'll play both ways if you let me. But I don't think that'll last too long at this level."

Josh Freeman and Kellen Winslow getting along just fine

KellenWinslowBucs
Here's a rule to live by: Just because you hear something over and over, don't assume it's true.

In this case, I'm referring to the notion that there's something going on between Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow and quarterback Josh Freeman. I've explored this and found absolutely nothing.

So, let's put an end to this here and now: It's unequivocally false.

All this stems from an intense discussion between Winslow and Freeman during a win over the Saints two weeks ago. Winslow made reference to it after that game, saying things got "heated." But the Bucs won the game and no one seemed happier about that than Winslow, a guy who loves winning more than his numbers -- despite what anyone else suggests.

This idea has taken hold because at least half of Freeman's 10 interceptions have come in instances where he's forced throws to Winslow, who usually wasn't open. This has resulted in an incorrect assumption by many who believe Freeman has been trying to keep Winslow happy, at any cost.

But that's just not the case.

What's actually happening is this: Winslow is the first read on many plays in the Tampa Bay playbook, and Freeman clearly isn't going through his progressions and looking to other options as much as he should. Instead, he's forcing the ball to Winslow or, in some cases, Mike Williams.

Coach Raheem Morris explained this problem in detail on Wednesday.

"Last year, (Freeman) simply did a better job of going through his progressions," Morris said. "Right now, he probably is playing his number in fantasy football. He’s trying to throw touchdowns. Sometimes it’s okay to throw the checkdown. It’s okay to go through your progressions. Right now he has a little too much confidence in what he’s doing with his arm, and forcing some things in there."

So, no, Winslow hasn't gone Keyshawn, author of Just Give Me the Damn Ball! One thing I've learned from interacting with Winslow in the past two-plus years is that he's not who you think he is. He wants to win. He works hard, playing through constant knee pain. He’s a good teammate. And he adores Morris – and Freeman, for that matter.

Have we butted heads? Yes. Does he love the media? Not really.

Yes, the Bucs have some issues. But, as it relates to this subject, Winslow and Freeman are very much on the same team, working toward the same goals.

NFL players rank Devin Hester 4th fastest in SI poll

DevinHesterBears2
Devin Hester, the NFL’s all-time leading touchdown returner, was ranked as the fourth fastest player in the league, according to a Sports Illustrated poll of players appearing in this week’s edition.

The Bears’ wide receiver and special team returner received three percent of the vote along with receiver Jacoby Ford of the Raiders.

Running back Chris Johnson of the Titans was No. 1 with 38 percent, followed by receiver DeSean Jackson (23 percent) of the Eagles and receiver Mike Wallace (12 percent) of the Steelers.

Johnson’s 4.24-second 40-yard dash at the 2008 combine is the fastest since they started recording them in 1999.

Andre Johnson feels 'tugging' in hamstring

AndreJohnson
His head coach and position coach both thought Andre Johnson looked fine during practice Wednesday.

Apparently, the Texans' All-Pro wide receiver didn't feel as good as he looked.

Johnson was skeptical when asked whether he'd return Sunday against Jacksonville from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the last three games.

"I just went out and did a little bit in practice today to see how I feel," Johnson said. "I wouldn't say I felt great. I didn't feel how I expected I would feel, but I was able to go out and make a few plays. We just keep taking it one day at a time."

Johnson said the problem is that he still encounters "tugging and stuff on my leg" when he runs. Cutting or running routes isn't an issue. Instead, it's a lack of explosion that concerns Johnson. Until that resurfaces, he said, he will not be ready to go.

"If I feel the way I feel today, I probably won't play Sunday, but today is not Sunday," Johnson said. "We still have some days ahead of us that we have to work through."

Head coach Gary Kubiak said the decision would ultimately be left to Johnson.

"It's hard for me just to watch a player practice, so I'll go back and sit down and watch it," Kubiak said. "But I'm going to listen probably more than anything. He looked good running to me. But we've got to see … like he wakes up (Thursday) - how sore is he? Those types of things.

"So I'm going to listen to him, and we've got a long way to go this season, and we need to make sure we do the right thing here. We've got a long week. We'll see what happens."

Jimmy Graham Top Targeted TE, Winslow 2nd

JimmyGrahamSaints
Through seven weeks of the season, there are four NFC South representatives among the six most-targeted tight ends in the NFL. The top two spots are occupied by NFC South players.

New Orleans’ Jimmy Graham has been targeted a league-high 66 times, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He has 45 catches for 674 yards and five touchdowns.

Tampa Bay’s Kellen Winslow is No. 2 with 56 targets. He has 31 catches for 282 yards and a touchdown. Atlanta’s Tony Gonzalez is No. 5 with 50 targets. Gonzalez has 35 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns.

Carolina’s Greg Olsen is No. 6. He’s been targeted 45 times and has 26 catches for 286 yards and three touchdowns. Olsen’s numbers could be higher, but he shares time -- and targets -- with Jeremy Shockey.

Even though he’s not the primary tight end, Shockey still ranks No. 16 with 37 targets. He has 22 catches for 291 yards.

Michael Irvin thrown out of son’s football game

MichaelIrvin
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin retired from the team more than 10 years ago, and joined the Hall of Fame in 2007.

Today, however, he has another project — his 14-year-old son. He's on the eighth grade football team at Prestonwood Christian Academy.

On Thursday night, Irvin was watching the team play in Celina, yelling instructions to his son from the Celina side. He later described what happened in a radio interview.

"I said, 'Go get him back! Go hit him back! He's over you, you go block him!' to send the message. 'You come up here, with that, this is what you're going.' Man, that coach came... that coach like, 'You get your butt out of here right now!'"

A Celina ISD administrator tells News 8 Irvin became loud and belligerent, using the F-word. Irvin denies he used profanity.
Regardless, a Celina assistant principal called police.

Irvin refused to return to the Prestonwood Christian Academy side of the field.

"I did say this to the man. I said, 'I'm waiting on the police. When the police say I'll go, I'll go. I have to go? I'll go.' You're not thinking you're man enough to come and move me. And I think that might have tipped it just a little bit right there. The way in which a big black man delivered that to that fellow. That might have just tipped it and scared a few people. Anyway, the police came."

Irvin left when a responding officer told him he was on Celina's property.

There are no restrictions against Irvin attending future games.

Santana Moss could return in three to six weeks

SantanaMoss
Injured Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss said Wednesday that he could return to the field sooner than the five to seven weeks that Coach Mike Shanahan said he expected.

Moss said doctors “gave me anywhere from three to six weeks. You never know. You never know what can happen.” Moss said that he is supposed to have the three pins removed from his broken left hand in roughly two weeks.

An even-keeled player, Moss said he didn’t become overly upset when he broke his hand and finger in Sunday’s game, and that he’ll let his recovery take its course while working to ensure that he can play effectively whenever he receives clearance to return to action.

“It happens,” Moss said. “I hate to be the guy that it happened to. I hate to not be out there. You feel like you let somebody down when you can’t be out there with the guys that depend on you. But like I said before, I just try to think positive about the situation and know that the time I take off, I’m getting a little mini-vacation, but I’m not going to treat it like a vacation, though. I’m going ot stay on my grind and do some of the things I can do.”

Moss, who during the offseason signed a new three-year, $15 million contract, led Washington’s wide receivers in catches and yards receiving before he was injured. Through six games, Moss has posted 25 catches for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

Roger Craig rooting for Frank Gore to surpass him Sunday

FrankGore2
Running back Frank Gore needs 110 yards to pass Roger Craig and move into second place on the 49ers’ all-time rushing list.

Funny, it sounds as if Craig is more excited about the upcoming milestone than Gore.

Craig, who at the 49ers’ facility today in advance of his induction into the team’s Hall of Fame in November, said Gore wasn’t aware that he was one big game removed from moving into second place.

Gore and Craig, who have forged a close friendship over the years, spoke today while Gore was receiving treatment in the training room.

“It just shows how mentally he’s just involved in winning and doing his job every day,” Craig said. “He wasn’t aware that he was that close. He wasn’t even aware that he was Fed Ex (Ground) Player of the Week (last week). I texted him and said congratulations on being the Fed Ex Player of the Week. He said ‘When did that happen?’ That shows how focused he is and I like that.”

Craig (7,064 yards) will attend Sunday’s game against the Browns, hoping to see Gore (6,955) surpass him at Candlestick.

“I hope he gets there,” Craig said. “Because if he gets 110 yards, that means we’re winning. When Frank gets over 100, we win. And I’d love to be there to see him do it in person.”

Gore is 390 yards away from surpassing Joe Perry and becoming the franchise’s all-time leading rusher.

Ed Reed practices on Wednesday

EdReed3
OWINGS MILLS, Md.-- Both starting safety Ed Reed and defensive end Terrence Cody practiced with the team Wednesday as the Ravens began preparations for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Both players suffered "stingers" to their shoulders and had to leave periodically during the game against Jacksonville Monday night. But any speculation about their availability ended when they started practicing and working with the first team. Cody, a second year player, is playing extremely well.

Willis McGahee has surgery on finger, considered day to day

WillisMcGaheeBroncos
Denver Broncos running back Willis McGahee had surgery Tuesday to repair a broken finger on his right hand, coach John Fox confirmed Wednesday.

While that much is known about McGahee's injury, what has been less clear is exactly how long he will be sidelined. Various reports list McGahee missing from one week to a month or more, but Fox hasn't been willing to commit to any timetable. Though McGahee isn't expected to play in Sunday's game against the Lions, Fox referred to him "day to day" and wouldn't entirely rule him out.

"We'll see what he looks like tomorrow," Fox said. "We will just see how it feels tomorrow, and we'll take it from there. I've seen guys play offense, defense with casts. A lot of it will depend on how fast he recuperates."

If McGahee is sidelined, the Broncos would be down to two healthy backs -- Knowshon Moreno, who was supplanted as the starter by McGahee, and third-stringer Lance Ball. Moreno and Ball took the bulk of the reps at practice Wednesday and figure to get a lot of action against the Lions.

McGahee's absence could open the door once again for Moreno, who tweaked his hamstring during the season opener against Oakland, didn't play in the next two games and has watched McGahee flourish. Moreno has been used more in passing situations, scoring his only TD of the season against San Diego.

Ben's Sunday itinerary: No Wilfork Island

VinceWilfork
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he's always had to be aware of where Vince Wilfork is on the field, but with two interceptions to his credit this season, now he's forced to worry about where the Pro Bowl defensive tackle might be lurking in the passing game as well.

"The big guy in the middle, he never seems to leave the field," Roethlisberger said Wednesday during a conference call with the New England media. "But he makes plays in the run game and [chuckling] he's even making plays in the passing game now.

"You definitely have to be aware [of where Wilfork is]. He's a heck of a job for our center and guard, but he seems to move around. I even saw him rush off the edge one time, I think against Oakland... he rushed on the tackle. So, whoever is against him, he's one of the premier guys in this league. I gotta be aware of where is in the passing game as well now."

Talking about his health, Roethlisberger said he's fine and that "everything came out with positive results from tests" on his knee after Sunday's win in Arizona. Asked how he feels near the midway point of the 2011 season, Roethlisberger noted he's got the "typical Week 7 body" and stressed that it's "nothing that's going to stop me or hinder my play."

As for what the Patriots have been able to do to hinder his play, Roethlisberger said it's an ability to mix up their defenses.

"They do a good job, switching from 3-4 up front to 4-3 or 3-3, and mixing it up on you," he said. "If you get into certain type of situations, they like to bring linebackers from the outside, bring them from both sides. For me, it's just being able to identify them and pick up those blitzes. If you can't, you’re not going to be able to get the ball off."

Roethlisberger was 30-of-49 passing for 387 yards with three touchdowns and an interception against New England last season, but also got sacked five times as the Patriots emerged from Heinz Field with a 39-26 triumph.

Chud's new schemes make Cats explosive

RobChudzinski
Before drafting quarterback Cam Newton, the Panthers made another pick up they hoped would improve the NFL's worst offense in 2010.

Ron Rivera worked with Rob Chudzinski in San Diego, where the man known as "Chud" was the tight ends coach and assistant head coach for Norv Turner. Rivera wanted to bring Turner's downfield passing attack to Charlotte, and had only one candidate in mind as his offensive coordinator.

Rivera knew the 43-year-old Chudzinski was young, smart and available. His contract had expired in San Diego, and he had also interviewed in Miami for the Dolphins' coordinator post.

Nearly halfway through the season, Chudzinski has used a mix of deep throws, an option package similar to what Newton ran at Auburn and a willingness to try different ideas to build the Panthers into one of the NFL's top offenses.

Entering Sunday's game with Minnesota, the Panthers are fifth in the league in total offense (416.6 yards per game), passing offense (288.4 yards) and first downs (22.3) - despite virtually the same lineup as a year ago when they were last in nearly every major offensive category.

"The biggest thing is the philosophy. Philosophically speaking, this offense is a vertical attack," Rivera said this week. "It's one of the things I really fell in love with when I was in San Diego for four seasons with Norv Turner. That's why bringing Chud in was so important - that vertical attack."

After Chudzinski was hired, he talked about getting yards in chunks. Through seven games, no team has more big plays than the Panthers.
Carolina has 41 offensive plays of 20 yards or more. Oakland is second with 37, while New England, Philadelphia and Houston each have 35.
The Panthers had 44 such plays all of last season, tied with Atlanta for last.

What might be most impressive is the Panthers' offense is clicking despite missing out on the OTAs and minicamps that are critical to a first-year staff with a rookie quarterback.

"There were a lot of moving parts early on," Chudzinski said. "Assessing all those things to make decisions on and putting the package together was the biggest challenge."

Newton and the re-emergence of veteran Steve Smith have been the biggest reasons for the Panthers' success. After an erratic preseason in which he completed only 42.1 percent of his passes, Newton shined once the games counted.

The Panthers drafted Newton with the No. 1 pick as their franchise quarterback, and he certainly looks to be on his way. He bounced back from a three-interception game at Atlanta in Week 6 with his most efficient performance last week in a 33-20 win over Washington.

Newton was 18-of-23 passing for 256 yards and one touchdown and ran for another. Newton is fourth in the league in passing yards - behind Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers - while Smith trails only Wes Welker in receiving yards.

Smith, 32, praised the new staff's use of him in the preseason, saying Chudzinski was putting him in a position to make more plays. Chudzinski also has taken advantage of Newton's skill set, adopting some of the read-option plays he ran at Auburn.

The Panthers also have incorporated a few quarterback runs that Tennessee used with Vince Young when Panthers receivers coach Fred Graves was on the Titans' staff. Quarterbacks coach Mike Shula and offensive line coach John Matsko also have background with the option.
"I think we're utilizing Cam and doing some things that he can do uniquely well, and we'll continue to look for those types of things to do," Chudzinski said. "I had to go a little bit out of my comfort zone and the things that I knew. It's a new challenge and a different challenge for me, which is good. I'm working to improve myself, as well."

Chudzinski spent two seasons as Cleveland's offensive coordinator in between his stints in San Diego. In 2007, his first year in Cleveland, the Browns had the league's No. 8 offense, and quarterback Derek Anderson, now Newton's backup, went to the Pro Bowl.

The following year an injury-riddled Browns team failed to score a touchdown over its final six games and finished next-to-last in total offense. New Browns coach Eric Mangini did not retain Chudzinski, who returned to San Diego.

Rivera said he never considered anyone else to oversee the Panthers' offense.

"He's a smart guy. He understands this game. He's learning coach Turner's offense. He's still growing in that offense," Rivera said. "He's going to be great at it. It's just a matter of time with him.”

Hurricanes to honor the 2001 national-title team

NFLU2009
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Here's one of the best ways Miami offensive line coach Art Kehoe can illustrate how good the 2001 Hurricanes were. There was one game where he remembers being unable to find anything to do at halftime. No adjustments to make, no meetings, no second-half strategizing, nothing.

And that was the national championship game.

"I know this," Kehoe said. "I will put that 2001 team up against anybody. No one can argue how good, how dominant, that team was."

The Hurricanes will celebrate the 10th anniversary of that national championship on Thursday night, while also recognizing the 2001 baseball national champions, the one-year anniversary of individual NCAA champions Ti'erra Brown (track) and Brittany Viola (diving), a five-year anniversary of Tabia Charles' NCAA title in the triple jump, and the 25-year anniversary of tennis players Lise Gregory and Ronni Reis winning the national championship in doubles.

In short, much of Miami's athletic history will be on full display.

"Clearly, a lot of those guys have set the standard here," Miami coach Al Golden said. "And that's what we're trying to get back to, to be honest with you. Again, we're not going to get there overnight. But, man, they set the standard with the way they play and their work ethic and commitment to each other."

It'll be the second time in less than a week that Sun Life Stadium has hosted a celebration for a national college football champion. The Miami Dolphins paid homage to the 2008 Florida Gators on Sunday, coinciding with Tim Tebow's return to the stadium, that time as a member of the Denver Broncos. With Sun Life also being where the Hurricanes now play, the "Gator Day," as many called it, wasn't overwhelmingly well received.

This week, no one seems to be complaining.

"I'm just glad we got it right and honor the right team on Thursday night," Golden said.

The ceremonies are all being held in concert with Miami's Atlantic Coast Conference game against Virginia.

Most of the 2001 Hurricanes will not be there Thursday night, many of them with a very good reason - they're still in the NFL. More than 30 players from that championship team went on to the NFL, and quite a few are remain there, a list that includes Jon Vilma, Ed Reed, Jeremy Shockey, Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, Kellen Winslow, Willis McGahee, Antrel Rolle, Vince Wilfork and D.J. Williams, among others.

The Miami players of today have heard countless stories about the 2001 club, and some shake their head in disbelief when they realize that it was difficult for players like Johnson and even Sean Taylor just to get on the field for that Hurricanes team at times.

"Goes to show how much talent they had," Miami linebacker Sean Spence said. "It's just a blessing just to be walking in the same doors they walked in."

Larry Coker coached that team, and in his eyes, the fact that so many players have persevered in the NFL for so long and therefore will be unable to attend Thursday is a tribute in itself to the greatness of the 2001 club.

"So many really just terrific guys," said Coker, now the coach at Texas-San Antonio. "It thrills me when I get a chance to watch a little bit of football or see some clips to see a Roscoe Parrish doing some things or an Antrel Rolle making plays or Ed Reed, on and on and on, it's a thrill for me and I'm really happy for all those guys. They're not just great players, they're great people."

Coker took over a juggernaut program at the start of that 2001 season. The Hurricanes started the season ranked No. 2 in the AP Top 25 and never went any lower, getting to No. 1 and staying there for the final 10 polls of the season. On the last three of those, they were unanimously selected for the top spot.

The Hurricanes were idle for 19 days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and Coker said one of the most memorable games for him remains the Sept. 27 trip to Pittsburgh, a 43-21 Miami victory. But the game that proved to him the Hurricanes were title contenders that season came Oct. 13, when Miami visited Florida State, forced six turnovers and posted an easy 49-27 win.

"I knew then we were going to be really hard to beat. They hadn't lost a game in 10 years at that stadium," Coker said.

Miami was truly tested only once the rest of the way, a 26-24 road win at Virginia Tech to end the regular season. After that, only the Rose Bowl against Nebraska remained, and the Hurricanes rolled out to a 34-0 lead at the half on the way to a 37-14 title-clinching victory.

The debate has raged since about whether the 2001 Hurricanes are the best college team ever, and it will continue for years to come. For his part, even Kehoe - who has rings from all five of Miami's title clubs - isn't sure, saying he thinks the 1986 and 2000 teams that fell short of winning national championships may merit being in the conversation.

This much, however, is without dispute: The 2001 Canes were perfect.

"We could throw it. We protected the passer well. We ran the ball pretty good. On defense, we could play pass and run. On special teams, we were really, really good. We had lots of depth and lots of competition and the coaching staff, I thought, was solid as hell," Kehoe said. "I'll say it again: I will put that team up against anybody. I don't know how we could go play the games, but I'll take them against anybody."

Brett Romberg likens Falcons to Packers

BrettRomberg
Tecumseh’s Brett Romberg believes that the Atlanta Falcons are capable of being a special team this year, just one of the reasons the seven-season NFL veteran centre opted to return to the team he last played for in 2009. “Hopefully, it’s something similar to the way Green Bay had something happen to them last year,” Romberg said of the 4-3 Falcons. “A little bit of a rocky start. Ebbs and flows. Win, loss, win, loss. Then all of a sudden, things are developing, players are gelling together. We’re understanding the capabilites of the players and accentuating their positives. Hopefully, it’s just a steamroller from here.”

Romberg had been out of the league for almost a year when he got the call from Atlanta in late August. “It was totally out of the blue,” he said. “The Falcons were interested in a guy coming in who knew the offence, who wouldn’t be a problem, something where I could jump right in and play. They have a great thing going here. They were interested in having somebody familiar with the system, who had a great relationship with the locker-room. There was basically no negatives. It was an easy transition on both sides. It’s a perfect fit.”

Another bonus from his NFL return? Romberg, 32, wasn’t required to endure a training camp. “They called right before fourth pre-season game,” he said. “Maybe out of the 8, 9 years (in the NFL), four of them were comfortable training camps, the other four were not knowing if you’re going to make the squad or not.”

Romberg also dealt some kudos out to his old team, the unbeaten Windsor AKO Fratmen, who play host to the Hamilton Hurricanes in Saturday’s Ontario Football Conference final at Alumni Field. “They’ve had a great season,” Romberg said. “Coach Mike LaChance has done a great job with the team.” AKO was scheduled to honour Romberg with a jersey retirement ceremony of his No. 65 this season, but those plans were put on hold when he returned to the NFL.

John Beck: Interception wasn’t Leonard Hankerson’s fault

LeonardHankerson
Washington Redskins quarterback John Beck said that his late-game interception on a pass intended for receiver Leonard Hankerson was his fault, not the rookie wide receiver’s.

With Washington down 30-20 on second-and-15 with 3:19 left to play, Beck threw a pass up the right sideline that Carolina cornerback Chris Gamble picked off before Hankerson – playing his first play all season – even looked back.

After the game, Beck said only that there was a “miscommunication” on the play, and it was believed that Hankerson — Washington’s third-round pick out of Miami — ran the wrong route. But Beck came into the locker room Monday to address the media regarding the interception.
The Redskins usually make the starting quarterback available only on Wednesdays and after games. But Beck told a PR representative that he wanted to talk to the media Monday morning.

Beck took several questions and then said he wanted to clear something up.

“On the play with Hankerson, it’s on me,” said Beck, who in his first start since 2007 completed 22 of 37 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown. “I’m the guy who’s got the ball in my hand, and I’m the one that makes the decision on where that ball goes. We’re very excited to have Hankerson be a part of this football team. He’s going to be a great asset to this team. Nothing goes on Hankerson. It all goes on me. You got that?”

Hankerson wasn’t in the locker room during the media availability session this morning.

Brandon Harris To Compete For Safety Position

BrandonHarris
Houston Texans free safety Danieal Manning had surgery Monday to repair a fractured fibula in his left leg.

He was injured while making a leaping interception in Sunday’s 41-7 victory at Tennessee. The Texans aren’t going to place Manning on injured reserve because they’re hoping he can play again this season.

Manning, who played his first five seasons with the Chicago Bears, got $9 million guaranteed to sign with the Texans. He played well during the first seven games. Manning has earned a lot of respect in the locker room. He’ll be replaced in the starting lineup by Troy Nolan, a three-year veteran and the top backup at both safety positions.

Rookies Shiloh Keo, a fifth-round pick, and Brandon Harris, a cornerback taken in the second round, will compete for the backup job. Harris was the backup at nickel corner behind Brice McCain. Last week, the Texans lost safety Dominique Barber for the season because of a foot injury.

Willis McGahee to miss Lions game after hand surgery

WillisMcGaheeBroncos
The Broncos will not have running back Willis McGahee this week against the Detroit Lions.

McGahee will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a fractured fourth metacarpal in his right hand. He suffered the injury early in the third quarter of the Broncos' 18-15 overtime victory against the Miami Dolphins.

At that point, McGahee appeared on his way to his fourth, 100-yard rushing game in his past five games. He finished with 76 yards on 18 carries.
It's also not likely that McGahee will be recovered in time to play the following week against the Oakland Raiders, but he's already stated his intentions for being there.

With McGahee sidelined, the Broncos are expected to start Knowshon Moreno with Lance Ball as the backup. The Broncos also have running back Jeremiah Johnson on the practice squad.

Santana Moss Out 5-7 Weeks

SantanaMoss
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — From healthy, first-place surprise to battered and struggling, the Washington Redskins had their fortunes take another dive Monday when running back Tim Hightower was declared out for the season with a torn knee ligament and receiver Santana Moss underwent hand surgery that is expected to sideline him for 5-7 weeks.

Hightower is the team's leading rusher. Moss is the top wideout.

Hightower and Moss were hurt in Sunday's 33-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Hightower's left knee buckled when he tried to make a cut during a 4-yard carry in the third quarter, ending his season with 321 yards on 84 carries.

Moss has 25 catches for 301 yards, second in receptions on the team behind tight end Davis. Moss broke his left hand in the first half against Carolina and had three pins inserted into the area around his index finger on Monday.

That leaves Gaffney, who has a team-high 361 yards, and either Anthony Armstrong or fifth-round rookie Niles Paul as the starting tandem for this week's game against the Buffalo Bills (4-2) at Toronto.

Ed Reed Fine After Stinger

The Ravens appeared to avoid a catastrophe as free safety Ed Reed and nose tackle Terrence Cody escaped serious injuries on the same play in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s 12-7 shocking loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Reed and Cody both suffered stingers while trying to stuff running back Deji Karim on a running play in the fourth quarter. Vince Wilfork's increased workload

VinceWilfork
The bye weekend offered an opportunity to step back, tie up loose ends, and update some statistical files. In doing so, the increased role of defensive lineman Vince Wilfork was one area that stood out.

Wilfork is one defender who seems most affected by the team's scheme change from a 3-4 to 4-3.

In previous years, Wilfork has been more of a two-down player. He'd play on first and second down, then almost always come off the field in more obvious passing situations. This year, Wilfork is staying on for all situations, with the opportunity to pass rush in addition to his traditional run-stopping role. In Oakland, for example, he played all but one snap.

Here is Wilfork's playing time breakdown through the first six games over the last three seasons (as charted in press box, small margin for error):

2009 -- 214 of 354 (60.4 percent)
2010 -- 277 of 422 (65.6 percent)
2011 -- 361 of 412 (87.6 percent)

Part of Wilfork's increase this year is tied to injuries along the defensive line. Albert Haynesworth missed two games with a nagging back injury, while interior sub rushers Mike Wright and Myron Pryor have landed on injured reserve. Because of that, more was needed out of Wilfork through six games.

The Patriots have Wilfork and Kyle Love as their top interior defensive linemen on the depth chart, with Haynesworth and Gerard Warren next in line. They now have Ron Brace and Brandon Deaderick as possible options, as both practiced for the first time last week after opening the year on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

With the added depth, Wilfork's playing time could be trimmed a bit from what we've seen over the first six games.

But the days of Wilfork as a two-down player, coming off the field in most every passing situation, clearly seem to be over. His role, perhaps more than any other player on defense, has been altered the most with the team's scheme change.

Brett Romberg finds role on Falcons sidelines

BrettRomberg
As the Atlanta Falcons prepared to kick off to the Detroit Lions, Tecumseh's Brett Romberg stood on the Ford Field sideline amidst his teammates, decked out in a black Falcons golf shirt and matching pants.

It's not the position he'd hoped for on his first chance to play an NFL game in Detroit.

Nonetheless, he was much closer to the action than a year ago.

"It was something that was totally unexpected," Romberg, 32, said of the late-August call he got from the Falcons, gauging his interest on returning to the team he'd last played for in 2009.

Unexpected and unlikely.

"I'd kind of moved on with my life a little bit," Romberg said after the Falcons dropped the Lions 23-16 Sunday. "I started a hedge fund with a buddy back in Miami. I was more focused on my second career, as opposed to getting back into the NFL.

"Luckily, things aligned, I got a phone call, and the rest is history."

So certain was the sixfoot-two, 293-pound centre, a seven-year NFL veteran, that his gridiron days were done that Romberg admitted if any other team came calling, he would have likely declined the offer.

"I don't know if the opportunity had arose with another organization, whether I would have jumped on it," Romberg said. "I don't think I would have taken it."

The Falcons, though, were a perfect fit.

They were looking for a veteran guy who knew their offence, was a good fit with their coaches and players, and who wouldn't ruffle feathers if he didn't see much game action.

"It was an easy transition on both sides," Romberg said. "I like the guys here quite a bit. I have a great relationship with them, coaches included. And being able to miss a whole training camp and come in and be on the team was pretty nice.

"There was basically no negatives."

Some sacrifice was involved, however. Romberg was supposed to stand up for his brother Bradley's wedding two weeks ago in Windsor.
"I had the (Falcons) video guys help me out with my best man's speech," Romberg said.

"I sent it up there with my wife (Emily).

"It would have been better to be there in person, but I did what I could."

Romberg's junior team, the Windsor AKO Fratmen, with whom he was named the CJFL's top offensive lineman in 1997, shelved a plan to retire his No. 65 jersey until at least next year.

"There's a lot of things you sacrifice, but this is a great opportunity," he said. "It's hard enough getting in the NFL once.

Getting in there twice is nothing short of a miracle."

Week to week, his role changes. Two weeks ago against Green Bay, Romberg subbed for injured guard Garrett Reynolds.

Sunday, he sought to help any way he could from his sideline perch.

"It's all about understanding the role that you have on Sunday," Romberg said.

"Whether it had been a couple of weeks ago, I had to jump in there against Green Bay, or this week, where it's looking at numbers, identifying blitzes, communicating with the coaches, telling the guys what I'm seeing from the side.

"You try to stay in the foot-ball game, help out as much as you can.

"You get anxious, you want to be out there, but you do what you can."

For a veteran, it's certainly not an easy role to fill.

"I love playing football," Romberg said. "I don't like watching it too much."

Regardless, compared to Romberg's vantage point last season - his living room - he'll definitely take the viewing upgrade.

Leonard Hankerson responds to Redskins critics on Twitter

LeonardHankerson
A lot of fans have been calling for Leonard Hankerson all season, after the third-round draft pick had failed to make the active roster during the Redskins’ first five games.

Well, the fans got what they want on Sunday, although Hankerson didn’t enter the game until Washington’s final drive. Then he appeared to have a miscommunication with quarterback John Beck, leading to Beck’s first interception of the day, which sealed the deal.

After the game, everyone said harmless things about the incident.

“I don’t know what to say about it,” Hankerson said, via The Insider.

“I might have maybe not needed at that moment to try that,” Beck said, via the same. “Hindsight, you can always say the ‘what ifs’ or the ‘should’ve would’ves.’ Hank came in and he and I weren’t on the same page, that was the ultimate thing.”

Thing is, though, several fans had already sent their thoughts on the matter to Hankerson via Twitter, which he didn’t exactly appreciate. See below.

hanktweet1010d
For the record, here were the three tweets he was responding to, sent from the three accounts referenced above.

* i wondered why @HankTime85 never got on the field, then the runs wrong route. Drafting receivers is not our specialty. #Redskins

* @HankTime85 way to run the route chumpzilla

* That is why @HankTime85 can’t get on the field. One play. Wrong route. #pisspoor

hanktweet1010b
But apparently there were more. So then Hankerson spoke more generally to his critics. See above.

hanktweet1010c
And then he realized that this was a losing battle. Seen here.

Kellen Winslow Scores Touchdown

KellenWinslowBucs
Kellen Winslow did not have his best game of the season against the Chicago Bears, but he did do something his fantasy owners had been hoping for: He finally found the endzone. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end caught just four passes for 25 yards, but his four-quarter touchdown catch makes for a reasonably productive afternoon.

Winslow hadn't been that productive from a fantasy perspective this year, but that was not for a lack of trying: he entered Sunday's game with 27 catches in six games, including three straight games with at least five catches. The lack of touchdowns has hurt his value, but he's been a decent option in points-per-reception leagues. On paper, today's matchup with the Bears looked enticing, with Chicago entering the game with one of the worst passing defenses in the league.

Santana Moss breaks left hand

GabySanchez
WASHINGTON -- The Marlins scored 18 runs in their first two games at Nationals Park without their No. 3 hitter, and they had to go without first baseman Gaby Sanchez again in the series finale Thursday.

Manager Jack McKeon kept Sanchez out of the lineup for the third consecutive game against Washington as the All-Star nurses a sore left hamstring.

"We'll evaluate him and see how he is, "McKeon said. "But if we keep winning, we'll keep him out.

"Let's be cautious, because I'd rather have him out for three or four days than two weeks."

Sanchez took swings in the batting cage before the game as he continues to head in the right direction. Greg Dobbs started the first two games in his stead, and Wes Helms got the start in the series finale against Nationals left-hander John Lannan.

Willis McGahee has broken hand

WillisMcGaheeBroncos
It’s not all good news for the Broncos on Sunday, after a stirring come-from-behind win in their home away from home of Sun Life Stadium.

McGahee left Sun Life Stadium with a soft cast on his right hand after suffering a fracture.

McGahee had his right ring finger and right pinkie wrapped. The Broncos' medical staff was reviewing X-rays after the game, and McGahee is expected to see a hand specialist today.

If McGahee needs surgery, he would miss significant time.

Running back Willis McGahee, who played at the University of Miami, suffered a broken hand during the 18-15 overtime win.  Coach John Fox confirmed the diagnosis after the game.

McGahee had 76 yards on 18 carries against the Dolphins, giving him 460 for the season.  It’s unknown whether and to what extent he’ll miss any time.

Jimmy Graham doesn't top 100 yds, but scores twice

JimmyGrahamSaints
Jimmy Graham did not set the NFL TE record with a fifth straight 100-yard effort, but he still had six catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns as the Saints annihilated the Colts in Week 7.

We don't have the snap count yet, but Graham was on the sidelines more than he is accustomed to due to his ankle injury and the lopsided score. With just 35 scoreless yards on three catches and the Saints holding a 34-7 halftime lead, Graham's owners had to be concerned that his night was over. It wasn't, as he dug out a low throw from Drew Brees on a five-yard TD catch, and then won a one-on-one ball from three yards out on the Saints' next series. Graham is the No. 1 TE in fantasy until further notice.

Leonard Hankerson makes forgettable debut for Redskins

LeonardHankerson
Several young Redskins saw significant action Sunday against the Panthers. In addition to center Erik Cook getting his first career start, rookie DeJon Gomes saw his first action at safety, rookie Niles Paul notched his first two career catches and rookie Leonard Hankerson was active for the first time of his career.

For Hankerson, it wasn’t a particularly memorable debut. Hankerson got on the field for one play – in the final three minutes of the game – but had a miscommunication with quarterback John Beck on the route he was supposed to run.

Beck fired the ball toward the right sideline as if he were expecting Hankerson to come back for the ball, but the rookie never turned around, and cornerback Chris Gamble intercepted the pass. It was Beck’s lone interception on the day.

“I don’t know what to say about it,” Hankerson said.

Said Beck: “When Hank came in, we felt good about trying to get a chunk play with him, if it was there. We just weren’t on the same page there. Maybe if we had been on the same page, something could’ve happened. I might have maybe not needed at that moment to try that. Hindsight, you can always say the ‘what ifs’ or the ‘should’ve would’ves.’ Hank came in and he and I weren’t on the same page, that was the ultimate thing.”

Drafted in the third round out of Miami, the 6-foot-2, 209-pound Hankerson is Washington’s biggest target, but he had struggled with drops during the preseason, and still had significant portions of the offense to learn, according to his coaches.

Hankerson, who in four preseason games recorded nine catches for 101 yards with a long of 25, got the nod on Sunday over veteran Donte Stallworth, who this season has appeared in three games, recording five catches for 46 yards.

Greg Olsen catches just one ball

GregOlsenPanthers
Greg Olsen caught just one pass for four yards in Sunday's win over the Redskins.

Olsen may have been limited by his turf toe issue. The Panthers ran a screen for Jeremy Shockey in a spot they'd normally use Olsen. In the four games prior to today, Olsen was averaging 5.0 catches for 42.5 yards with three touchdowns. After next week's game against the Vikings, Olsen will have the bye to rest his toe.

Ray Lewis: Playing on Monday night never gets old

RayLewisWallpaper
Playing on "Monday Night Football" is nothing new to Ray Lewis. Over the course of his 16-year career, the Ravens linebacker has lined up on Monday night 13 times.

In those 13 games, Lewis has recorded 120 tackles. He's defended eight passes. He's grabbed one interception and forced one fumble. He's been a part of six Monday night wins and seven Monday night losses.

Does playing on Monday night ever get old? No way, Lewis says.

In fact, the 12-time Pro Bowler, who has experienced pretty much every high an NFL player can achieve, says that Monday nights are the "biggest stage" in football.

Hank Williams Jr. might not be around anymore, but that doesn't mean that Lewis isn't going to be ready for some football come three days from now when the Ravens take on the 1-5 Jaguars.

"It's no secret. Mondays (are) Mondays," Lewis said. "Like I said to these young guys, whatever opportunity you want to leave, whatever legacy you want to leave, these are the nights you leave it. Not that you don't play hard every other day, but these nights are special. So savor the moment, man, and have a great time doing it."

NFL players run out of the tunnel every weekend fired up and ready to play. The intensity level is always high regardless of who they're playing or what time the game is, and the stakes are always high, as well. Teams know that any game can cost them a shot at the playoffs, a home playoff game or a playoff bye.

So what makes Monday nights so special in a player's mind? What is it about playing on that one day that gets guys so amped up?

"It's the biggest stage for our business in the world," Lewis said. "Everybody is sitting home on that Monday night and everybody wants to see how good you're doing. Records are sometimes one thing, but when you get on Monday night, it's all about the individual. You know, how can you be great that night? It's where you stick out, where you stand out and where you play as a team and things like that.

"And that's what makes Monday night special is that everybody - even in the entire league - gets to sit home and watch that one game."

There's also the tradition aspect that comes into play. While Jaguars rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert might not be familiar with Howard Cosell ("No, I don't even know who that is," Gabbert told Jacksonville reporters yesterday. "That's probably before my time."), millions grew up watching "Monday Night Football" with Cosell and Frank Gifford and have been watching football on Monday nights for the last 30 years.

"It's tradition, man," head coach John Harbaugh said. "You know, it's 'Monday Night Football.' Probably half of you guys have got it on your phone app, right, the 'Monday Night Football' song? So we're excited about it. We're looking forward to it."

Vernon Carey's move to guard helping Dolphins' run game

VernonCarey
One of the Dolphins' biggest weaknesses last season was the play of their interior offensive line, except for OLG Richie Incognito. They addressed the center position in the draft by selecting Mike Pouncey, who has played well, and moved Vernon Carey from right tackle to right guard. Carey played some guard in college and is one of the big reasons that the 'Fins' run blocking has opened up holes for rookie RB Daniel Thomas to take advantage of.

According to Pro Football Focus, Carey, who is 6-5, 340, is the 10th-best run-blocking offensive guard in the NFL. Head coach Tony Sparano, whose specialty is with the hogs up front, lauded Carey's performance against the Jets.

"I would argue Vernon played the best up front the other night. Really starting to look like a guard in there, he really is," Sparano said. "This guy is going to be a good guard."

Through Week Six, the Dolphins are 13th in the league with a 4.4-yard rushing average, with Carey and Pouncey on the interior. Last season they were second-to-last, running for 3.7 yards a carry.
